Hiawatha Locks in Final Spot at AA State Tournament

The Hiawatha Post 66 legion baseball team secured the final spot and will joining Corning Post 216 at the AA State Tournament in Concordia this upcoming weekend. 

Hiawatha went 2-0 in the Zone 3 tournament on Sunday in Seneca with wins over Doniphan County Post 55 and Corning. 

Game 1: Doniphan County 4, Hiawatha 7 

Both teams scored two runs in the first inning with Doniphan County getting a two-RBI single from Beckam Griffin and Hiawatha getting a two-run home run from Ashton Rockey. 

Hiawatha built a 4-2 lead with an RBI from Payton Teel in the second inning and an RBI from Cooper Jacobson in the fifth inning. 

Doniphan County would tie the game at 4-4 in the sixth inning with a two out, two-RBI double from Cooper Eberly. 

Hiawatha responded with three runs in the bottom of the sixth thanks to a wild pitch, an error, and a double by Jacobson to help secure the win. 

Jacobson was named the McDonald's of Hiawatha and Seneca player of the game going 2-for-3 with a single, a double, a walk, two RBI's, and one run. He was also the starting pitcher and went five-plus innings, allowing four runs on five hits with seven strikeouts. 

Doniphan County was eliminated from the tournament with the loss and they finish their summer with a record of 15-16. 

Game 2: Corning 8, Hiawatha 11

Despite being the top seed in the tournament, Corning was the road team in this matchup and scored three runs in the first inning. They scored on an error, got an RBI groundout from Rayce Fisher, and an RBI single from Aiden Talley. 

Hiawatha got two back in the bottom of the first with a run on a passed ball and also getting an RBI double from Kaden Smith. Hiawatha tied the game at 3-3 with a bases loaded walk in the second inning. 

Both teams scored in the third inning with Corning getting two runs with RBI's from Fisher and Brett Heideman. Hiawatha posted four runs in that frame with the big hit being a two-RBI single from Payton Teel. 

The score remained 7-5 until the sixth inning where Hiawatha would score four runs on three hits which included a two-RBI double from Cooper Jacobson and another RBI from Josh Smith. 

Corning tried to make things interesting in the seventh inning as they would score three runs which included an RBI single from Hunter Lamond but it wasn't enough to complete the comeback. 

Teel was named the McDonald's of Hiawatha and Seneca player of the game with two hits, two RBI's, and two runs scored. 

Hiawatha (25-10) and Corning (14-6) will play a winner take all game on Monday night at 6:00 PM in Seneca to determine the tournament champion which will also determine seeding and first round matchups in Concordia.
