Hiawatha Advances to AA Semifinals while Corning Wins Two Elimination Games to Stay Alive

Day two of the AA Legion State Baseball Tournament in Concordia continued on Saturday with Hiawatha Post 66 and Corning Post 216 both staying alive to fight another day. 

Game 1: Corning 8, Norton 7 

Corning scored six runs in the first three innings including four runs in the third inning. Drew Gibbs an RBI single in the first, Hunter Lamond a sac-fly in the second, Ben Haverkamp and Lamond adding two-RBI singles in the third. 

They would add two more runs in the fifth and they were able to hold on for the win. Norton eliminated with the loss as they scored one in the second, three in the third, two in the fifth, and one in the seventh. 

Owen Hammond and Caden Seems led Norton in the loss both finishing with two hits and two RBI's. 

Haverkamp threw 102 pitches and finished six strong innings for Corning allowing six earned runs with three walks and two strikeouts. A combination from Henry Heideman and Drew Gibbs got the last three outs of the game. 

Game 2: Smith County 5, Hiawatha 8 

Hiawatha moves one win away from the State Championship game with their win over Smith County. 

Hiawatha led 5-0 after four innings with two runs in the second, one in the third, and two in the fourth. In that stretch, Cooper Wischropp provided an RBI with a sac-fly, Sam Dunn had a triple and a run scored, Ashton Rockey an RBI single, and Cooper Jacobson provided a sac-fly. 

Smith County got to within 5-3 with three runs in the fifth on just one hit. They got a sac-fly from Luke Franklin, an RBI from Brandt Wilson, and got the other on a wild pitch. 

Hiawatha got key insurance runs in the sixth inning with three runs on four hits. RBI singles by Sam Dunn and Micah Oldham and they got another run courtesy of a balk. 

The first two batters that reached scored for Smith County in the seventh but the rally stopped there and Hiawatha held on for the win. 

Brandt Barnhill pitched four innings for Hiawatha allowing six hits and two run with three walks and one strikeout. Jacobson and Dunn combined to finish the remainder of the game after that. 

Game 3: Smith County 5, Corning 7 

Corning survived a second elimination game in the second to last game of the night with another thrilling win against Smith County. 

Both teams scored early and often with Corning leading 6-4 after three innings. Corning got three runs in the first with a two-RBI double from Brett Heideman and an RBI single from Paxton Bowers. The one run in the second was on an RBI single by LJ Koelzer and the two runs in the third on RBI singles from Ben Haverkamp and Koelzer. 

Smith County scored two in the first and two in the second thanks to RBI's from Daeveon Orr, Brandt Wilson, and Reed Doane. 

Both teams got their final runs in a wild fifth inning with Rayce Fisher providing a sac-fly for Corning and Wilson for Smith County with a double. Both teams had bases loaded opportunities and both hit into double plays to end those threats. 

Aiden Talley pitched the first four innings for Corning and gave up six hits and four earned runs while Heideman finished with three strong innings in relief allowing just one run on two hits. 

Coverage continues on Sunday with Corning looking to win a third elimination game starting at 1:00 PM against either Concordia or Marysville. Hiawatha will play the defending champs Iola at 3:30 PM with a spot in Monday's title game on the line.

If Corning wins their first game on Sunday, they will play at 6:00 PM against either Iola or Hiawatha with the second spot in the championship up for grabs. All the action will continue live on 103.9 KNZA
