The Sabetha legion baseball team opened up their 2024 season with a come from behind 7-6 win over Corning on Wednesday night.
Sabetha scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first off the bat of Christian McAfee with an RBI single. Corning would tie the game at 1-1 in the top of the third inning with an RBI single from Drew Gibbs.
Sabetha would add three runs in the bottom of the third inning on an RBI single from Easton Bradbury and a two RBI single from LT Thomas. Corning would get within 4-3 with two runs in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI single from Miles Wimberly and a sac-fly from Aiden Talley.
Corning's Henry Heideman would score on a wild pitch to tie the game at 4-4 in the top of the sixth inning and they would take a 6-4 lead in the seventh on an RBI groundout from LJ Koelzer and a bases loaded walk to Heideman.
Sabetha would rally and score three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to win the game 7-6. They would load the bases with one out on singles from McAfee, Bradbury, and Ike Tramp. The first of the three runs would score on a wild pitch, the second was scored on a walk, and the walk off run was scored on a violation called against Corning's catcher stepping out of the box.
McAfee started the game on the mound for Sabetha and pitched three innings giving up one run and striking out six. Jacob Grimm and Will Ulrich combined to pitch the last four innings.
Gibbs was the starting pitcher for Corning and he struckout seven while giving up three earned runs and walking five.
Sabetha's LT Thomas was the McDonalds of Hiawatha and Seneca player of the game reaching base in two of his three at-bats including a two RBI single. He was the lone player in the game to drive in multiple runs.
Sabetha in the game posted seven runs, 10 hits, one error, and nine left one base. Corning in the game posted six runs, six hits, two errors, and nine left on base.
