Week 4 Games

8M-I District 4

(0-3) Washington County at (2-1) Lincoln

The Washington County Tigers came off a tough loss last week losing to the top five ranked in 8M-Dll Hanover 52-0. So far, the Tigers have been outscored on the year by their opponents 164-12. The Tiger's meeting last week versus Hanover was their first time playing each other since 1982, after the Wildcats took the dominant victory, they now lead the all-time series against the Tigers 9-4.

Lincoln is gaining some traction under their feet to start the year after last week’s crushing defeat over the St. John's/Tipton Catholic Blue Jays 52-6. The offensive charge was led heavily by the sophomore quarterback, Jeremiah Miller, who threw for 157 yards, rushed for 108 on 13 carries, and had four total touchdowns. The Leopards also stood stout on defense with their six sacks against the Bluejays, two alone from junior Austin Ahring. With the victory over the Bluejays, Lincoln has not lost a home game for five straight, dating back to last season.

The Tigers lead the all-time matchup history with the Leopards 3-2; However, the Tigers have lost the last two straight in 2023 and 2022: 42-8, 14-6.

Brandon’s Pick: Lincoln
Justin’s Pick: Lincoln
Kryndon’s Pick: Lincoln

(1-2) Clifton-Clyde at (1-2) Lakeside-Downs

Last week the Eagles took flight, Clifton Clyde snatched a fatal blow of 46-0 over the Linn Bulldogs in a one-sided battle, in which The Eagles had a total of 307 offensive yards, forced two turnovers, and converted 4-6 third downs. After the victory, the Eagles are now only being outscored 120-80 on points this year by their opponents. This is also the first time in back-to-back seasons since 1996 and 1997 that the Eagles start 1-2. The Eagles have now defeated Linn in 14 of their last 15 games dating back to 2000 while Linn’s lone win in that stretch was in 2014.

The Lakeside Knights lost a heartbreaker last week 42-38 against Logan/Palco, just a week after coming off their first win of the season destroying Stockton 46-0. The game against Logan/Palco was a 24-24 tied battle entering halftime, but unfortunately for the Knights, they couldn’t rally in the final quarter. Leading the Knights offensively, however, was Kaden Mccoy who had 54 rushing yards and two touchdowns, as well as Reece Remus who had a total of 93 yards and a touchdown.

The Eagles and the Knights have not played each other since 2015. Both teams played each other every year in a stretch from 2006 to 2015. In that stretch, the Eagles won 8-2 in 10 total matchups.

Brandon’s Pick: Clifton-Clyde
Justin’s Pick: Clifton-Clyde
Kryndon’s Pick: Clifton-Clyde

8M-II District 3

(3-0) Blue Valley-Randolph at (3-0) Axtell – TVL

Blue Valley-Randolph now in back-to-back years get off to a hot 3-0 start, combining to outscore their opponents this year 126-42. The Rams won a dominant game last week against KC Christian Academy, by coming out of the gates in the first quarter and dropping 30 points, but before play could continue there was weather that forced the game to stop, which eventually had the game called soon after, sparing KC Christian Academy from what this Blue Valley-Randolph team can bring offensively this season. The Rams are 2-0 all-time against KC Christian Academy with back-to-back season 30-0 wins.

The Axtell Eagles took on Chase County last Friday, the first all-time meeting between the two teams, and as much as it was a welcoming, it was also a closing. Axtell closed Chase County out to the whopping number zero in the 46-0 victory. The win extends the Axtell Eagles to their state-leading game-winning streak of 42 games.

The Eagles lead the all-time series versus the Rams 27-7, Axtell has won 12 straight over the Rams, having not dropped a game to Blue Valley-Randolph since 2011. That year the Eagles lost to the Rams they were 2-7 on the year, outstandingly that is the worst season for this Axtell team in the last 27 years.

Brandon’s Pick: Axtell
Justin’s Pick: Axtell
Kryndon’s Pick: Axtell

(3-0) Frankfort at (3-0) Hanover – TVL – 92.1 KMZA

Frankfort in back-to-back seasons start their year 3-0, after rolling off a 76-0 win over Solomon, they are ready to keep rolling with the momentum. Frankfort is also currently ranked #2 by reliable polls in the state of Kansas high school athletics. While outscoring teams 218-56 on the year, the offensive general for these Wildcats has been Wes Anderson. Anderson is 36-45 on completed passes, throwing for 806 yards, and 16 touchdowns with 0 interceptions. Anderson also adds on another four touchdowns via the run game with 75 yards rushing. Lane Loiseau is also having a stellar season with 145 yards rushing, 334 yards receiving, and 12 total touchdowns. Frankfort is in one of their hottest years averaging over 70 points per game and 391 yards of offense a game.

The Hanover Wildcats are off to their best start since 2021 when they started 3-0. Hanover comes off a staggering 52-0 win over Washington County, which now has Hanover outsourcing their opponents on the year 136-16. The Wildcats’ meeting last week taking on the Tigers was their first time playing each other since 1982, after the Wildcats took the crushing win they now lead the all-time series against the Tigers 9-4.

Hanover has won 15 out of the last 19 games against Frankfort. However, Frankfort holds a two-game winning streak at this moment over Hanover, winning both the regular season game last year and the Sectional round playoff win 38-12 last year.

Brandon’s Pick: Frankfort
Justin’s Pick: Frankfort
Kryndon’s Pick: Frankfort

8M-II District 4

(0-3) Thunder Ridge at (0-3) Linn

Thunder Ridge extends themselves to a five-game losing streak, dating back to last year, after their 54-6 loss to the Hill City Ringnecks. Evan Slavik had a solid passing game for the Longhorns, throwing for 106 yards and a touchdown. Jimmy Escobar was his primary go-to for the night, racking up 41 receiving yards, while also padding rushing 40 yards. Evan Slavik is also having a decent passing season all around with 357 passing yards, three touchdowns, and four interceptions. The Longhorns have yet to find that dominant offensive game for their star upperclassmen.

Linn has not started 0-3 since 2019, a season that ended 0-9. After last week’s loss to Clifton Clyde 46-0 the Bulldogs have now been outscored by their opponents 176-43. In the few bright spots in the loss to the Eagles, the Bulldogs forced one fumble and had one interception. Dylan Ohlde had the best performance for the Bulldogs with his 38 rushing yards on offense and 9 tackles plus a sack on defense. Clifton Clyde has now defeated the Bulldogs in 14 of their last 15 games dating back to 2000 while Linn’s lone win in that time was in 2014.

This will be the first meeting between these two teams on Friday night.

Brandon’s Pick: Thunder Ridge
Justin’s Pick: Linn
Kryndon’s Pick: Thunder Ridge

1A District 2

(0-3) Maranatha at (0-3) Rossville

Maranatha Academy is off to a 0-3 start after losing last week against Maur Hill-Mount Academy 65-12. The 12 points were the most points put up in a game so far this season. They’ve been outscored in their first three games 181-18 with the other two losses coming against KC Harmon in week one and at Uniontown in week two.

There haven’t been many teams, if any, in the state that have played a harder schedule through the first three weeks of the season than Rossville. The Bulldogs lost in week one in overtime to Silver Lake by seven, they lost by five at home to St. Marys in week two, and last week they lost 31-28 at Nemaha Central. All three teams are currently ranked inside the top five in 2A according to K-Preps. Brandon’s Pick: Rossville
Justin’s Pick: Rossville
Kryndon’s Pick: Rossville

1A District 3

(0-3) Valley Falls at (1-2) Onaga

Valley Falls took another rough loss last week against ACCHS 43-8 last Friday. The Dragons allowed the Tigers to dominate on the run game, allowing them to rush for 285 yards and six touchdowns. Valley Falls has now dropped to 0-3 on the year with their opponents outscoring them 99-22. The Dragons are also now 1-7 against ACCHS all-time.

The Onaga Buffaloes wrapped up their league play with last week's crushing loss to Centralia. The Buffaloes had a plentiful of quality drives but just couldn’t find the proper finish. Jackson Kolterman had 120 yards rushing, which included a 39-yard touchdown run late in the game. Onaga may have finished 1-2 in league play but they come in with high hopes now entering district play for the remainder of the season. The Buffaloes have also continuously averaged over 200 yards a game through their first three weeks.

The Dragons are 4-12 all-time when facing the Buffaloes, the last time both teams played was last year resulting in the lone win of the Buffaloes season 65-22.

Brandon’s Pick: Onaga
Justin’s Pick: Onaga
Kryndon’s Pick: Onaga

(2-1) McLouth at (3-0) Jackson Heights

McLouth suffered their first loss of the season last week against Riverside 34-14. They trailed the Cyclones 21-0 at halftime and then 34-0 after the third quarter. The Bulldogs were able to put up a couple of touchdowns in the fourth quarter. They got a 71-yard touchdown run from Gage Fields and got a 31-yard touchdown run from Coltin Harsh.

Jackson Heights remained #4 in the latest K-Preps rankings in Class 1A as they moved to 3-0 last week with a dominant 53-0 win at Horton. Drake Mellies completed 7 of 10 passes for 120 yards and three touchdowns. The Cobras rushed for over 300 yards and averaged 12 yards per carry. Titus Eisenbarth had 139 yards and Kade Holliday rushed for 104 yards.

This will be the first meeting between Jackson Heights and McLouth since 2015 in which Jackson Heights won 46-8. McLouth’s last win over the Cobras was 28-20 back in 2014.

Brandon’s Pick: Jackson Heights
Justin’s Pick: Jackson Heights
Kryndon’s Pick: Jackson Heights

(2-1) Jefferson County North at (0-3) Pleasant Ridge

The Chargers have now won back-to-back games since losing their season opener to Maur Hill-Mount Academy. JCN defeated Oskaloosa last week in dominant fashion 30-0 after beating Horton in week two 28-14. Merrick Noll finished with 24 carries for 104 yards and a touchdown while Will Elias finished with 17 carries for 100 yards and three touchdowns.

The Rams have had a tough start to their season, and it continued last week with a 62-6 loss against Troy. The lone touchdown was at the end of the game against the Trojans, and it was a seven yard run from Jacob Stewart.

JCN won last season’s matchup against Pleasant Ridge 62-0, and they’ve outscored the Rams 112-8 in their last two meetings. The Rams are looking for their first win against the Chargers since 2021. Since 2004, Pleasant Ridge holds a 13-7 edge in the series.

Brandon’s Pick: JCN
Justin’s Pick: JCN
Kryndon’s Pick: JCN

1A District 4

(1-2) Doniphan West at (2-1) Centralia – TVL

Doniphan West came off a tough road loss to another set of Mustangs in Valley Heights. Positive points arrived for the Mustangs with another two-touchdown game from Senior Kelby Windmeyer. The Mustangs have also looked towards Kolter Peterson who’s been giving some sparks for the young team. There were also no turnovers at all in the game so that added to another clean night offensively handling the ball for the Mustangs. Doniphan West drops to 2-7 in the all-time series versus Valley Heights.

Centralia came swinging last week with their 42-6 win over the Onaga Buffaloes, only allowing them to have a total of six offensive possessions. Centralia all around had a great game with five touchdowns coming from the offense and another touchdown coming from a strip fumble off special teams. Jacob Flentie had a stellar night with over 160+ offensive yards and his three total touchdowns. The Single-Wing Set offense has been troubling for teams to stop all season, and the Panthers look to keep the scheme rolling.

Centralia leads the all-series matchup against the Mustangs 15-1, the sole win from Doniphan West dates to 2006, when the Mustangs won 27-26.

Brandon’s Pick: Centralia
Justin’s Pick: Centralia
Kryndon’s Pick: Centralia

His performance earned him a spot as one of the MSC Radio’s athletes of the week. Hunter Engemann and Jackson Hartman each caught five passes. Engemann went for 101 yards and Hartman tallied 75 yards.

Horton has dropped back-to-back games since the season opening win at Valley Falls. They lost last week at home to Jackson Heights 53-0. Horton gave up over 400 yards of total offense to the Cobras, including over 300 on the ground. The Chargers have been outscored 81-14 in their last two games.

This will be the first meeting between Troy and Horton since 2021 with the Trojans winning that game 46-21. Troy has won six in a row against Horton with the Chargers’ last win coming back in 2013. Since 2004, Troy holds a 13-2 advantage against Horton.

Brandon’s Pick: Troy
Justin’s Pick: Troy
Kryndon’s Pick: Troy

MH-MA has won the last two meetings against Riverside with the Cyclones last win coming back in 2019. From 2011 to 2021 the two teams faced off nine times with the Ravens holding the 5-4 edge.

Brandon’s Pick: Riverside
Justin’s Pick: Riverside
Kryndon’s Pick: Riverside

Brandon’s Pick: Valley Heights
Justin’s Pick: Valley Heights
Kryndon’s Pick: Valley Heights

2A District 3

(3-0) Riley County at (3-0) Council Grove

Riley County is 3-0 with wins by 13, 1, and last week 6 points against Chapman in a 28-22 game that suspended for a while due to lightning but the Falcons got a three-yard TD from Sam Allen in the fourth quarter to secure the win. Council Grove from the Flint Hills League has this tough district opener as well as looming 2A battles against new Big East teams Silver Lake and St. Mary's on the horizon.

Brandon’s Pick: Riley County
Justin’s Pick: Riley County
Kryndon’s Pick: Council Grove

(2-1) Silver Lake at (3-0) St. Marys – Big East

St.Marys cruised to a 42-0 win over Jefferson West last Friday in a game that was called by
weather midway through the 3rd quarter. 5 different players scored for the Bears including junior Lane Smith who had a pick 6 on defense. St. Marys didn't allow a first down during the game in posting the shutout.

Silver Lake bounced back from their week 2 loss to Nemaha Central with a hard fought win at
Perry-Lecompton, 18-12. The Eagle defense came up with some big stops and junior wide out
Dayne Johnson continued to dazzle with a few more clutch receptions. QB Dysen Schooler also had a big night throwing for 296 yards & 2 scores plus ran another 143.

The Bears now look to break the Silver Lake jinx/curse in a huge 2A District 3 opener as the
combined record of all 5 teams in the district is 14-1!!! Silver Lake has won 21 games in a row
over St.Marys since 2004, including an exhilarating 29-28 win last season.

Brandon’s Pick: St. Marys
Justin’s Pick: St. Marys
Kryndon’s Pick: Silver Lake

2A District 4

(2-1) Royal Valley at (2-1) Sabetha – Big East – Sabetha Channel

It's a big 2A District opener between these 2-1 Big East teams with Nemaha Central looming in the district for both Royal Valley and Sabetha. It's also the first meeting since 2021 between these squads with Sabetha winning the last six games against Royal Valley dating back to 2015.

The Panthers are coming off their first loss of the year 32-14 against Holton, a game in which they turned the ball over four times and had four penalties of 15 yards that made the final score quite deceiving. Sophomore fullback Manny Oliveira scored both Panther touchdowns last week while Jaxson Stevens went over 150 yards rushing in the game and nearly 500 for the season.

Sabetha beat the same Holton team 7-6 in week one and after being tripped up by Perry Lecompton, the Bluejays bounced back last week with a 35-0 win at Hiawatha. The Sabetha defense has now allowed 18 total points this season in three games and held Hiawatha to less than 40 total yards of offense and no first downs until the final two minutes last week.  The Jays are also getting healthier with three players back this week that missed week three including Cole Menold and Khye Menold as well as Will Voos, who is a top running back that hasn't played yet this season coming back from injury.

Brandon’s Pick: Sabetha
Justin’s Pick: Royal Valley
Kryndon’s Pick: Royal Valley

(1-2) ACCHS at (2-1) Oskaloosa – NEKL

ACCHS was able to pick up their first win of the season last week against Valley Falls 43-8. That was after suffering back-to-back losses to start the season against McLouth and Riverside. The Tigers rushed for 285 yards and averaged nearly 12 yards per carry against the Dragons. Max Bottorff had nine carries for 168 yards and three touchdowns while Kannon Crossland added 12 carries for 82 yards and two touchdowns. Evan Falk also found the endzone on a 38-yard run.

Oskaloosa had a tough go last week against Jefferson County North as they lost their first game of the season 30-0. JCN rushed for over 200 yards and had two 100-yard rushers in the game. The Bears haven’t started a season 2-1 since 2017.

This will be the fifth all-time meeting between the Tigers and Bears with ACCHS winning all four meetings including last year 26-20.

Brandon’s Pick: Oskaloosa
Justin’s Pick: ACCHS
Kryndon’s Pick: Oskaloosa

3A District 4

(0-3) Jefferson West at (0-3) Hiawatha – Big East – 103.9 KNZA & Hiawatha Channel

It was a tough go for Jefferson West last week as they were shutout by St. Marys 42-0 in what was the first all-time meeting between the two schools. The Tigers have played a difficult schedule so far this season as their first three opponents have a combined record of 8-1. The Jeff West offense has had some struggles as they have scored just 16 total points through three games including just two points over their last two games.

Hiawatha has also played a difficult stretch to begin the season, and it continued last week with a 35-0 loss against Sabetha. The Redhawks are now just 4-13 against the Bluejays dating back to 2006 including nine straight losses in the series. The Redhawks have had to deal with some injuries early in the season.

The Tigers snapped a brief two-game skid against Hiawatha last season with a 16-14 win. Since 2004, Jefferson West is 14-6 against Hiawatha with the Redhawks last win in the series coming in 2022 which was a final score of 20-7.

Brandon’s Pick: Jefferson West
Justin’s Pick: Jefferson West
Kryndon’s Pick: Hiawatha

(1-2) Perry-Lecompton at (1-2) Holton – Big East – Holton Channel

Holton got their first win of the season 32-14 at Royal Valley as the Wildcats took advantage of four Panther turnovers and pulled away from a 14-8 halftime advantage by scoring every possession of the second half. Bodie Dillon had a pair of touchdown runs including a 64-yarder while Korban Wilson added a touchdown as well as an interception on defense to go along with kicking three PAT's and a field goal that gave Holton a three-score lead early in the fourth quarter. Kyler Jackson leads the balanced Holton backfield with just over 200 yards rushing now this fall.

Holton has homecoming to open district play this week and now has some added confidence facing a Perry Lecompton team they have beaten the last four seasons by at least 20 points. This year the Kaws are 1-2 but couldn't back up their 12-9 win at Sabetha in week two as they fell last week to Silver Lake in another close game 18-12.

Perry Lecompton returned to quarterback last week filling in for Garrett Metcalfe and was 7-20 for 75 yards and leads the Kaws this season with 114 yards rushing through three games. Fellow senior Eli Dean has been productive as well with a team leading 16 catches for 178 yards and 82 yards rushing with three total touchdowns. Koltyn Kaniper has been in on 47 tackles and made five stops behind the line of scrimmage to lead the Perry defense this year.

Brandon’s Pick: Holton
Justin’s Pick: Holton
Kryndon’s Pick: Holton

Cincere Lewis is leading the offense for Schlagle 429 passing yards and six touchdowns while he’s also the team’s second leading rusher with 185 yards.

Atchison has dominated their last two opponents in Meadowlark Conference play since starting the season with a loss to Ottawa. They beat Harmon in week two 55-6 and Sumner Academy at home last week 55-16. The Phoenix wasted little time last week scoring 35 points in the second quarter and leading the game 49-0 at halftime. Kolton Bonnel completed five of six passes for 115 yards and three touchdowns. Eric Smith III caught two touchdowns while Jaden Carter rushed for two scores.

Atchison has won three straight against Schlagle including 54-8 last season. Schlagle’s last win against Atchison was 33-24 back in 2019. Since 2010, Atchison holds the slight edge of 7-6 in 13 meetings.

Brandon’s Pick: Atchison
Justin’s Pick: Atchison
Kryndon’s Pick: Atchison

Non-District

(2-1) Nemaha Central at (3-0) Chanute

Nemaha Central has had back-to-back impressive wins after their long winning streak got snapped in week one against Marysville. They beat Silver Lake 35-7 in week two and then last week they won at home against Rossville 31-28. Carter Hajek once again led the Thunder rushing for 170 yards on 37 carries with three touchdowns while adding another score through the air with 39 yards.

Kris Harding had a rushing touchdown and a passing touchdown while Quinton Harding added a touchdown run as well. It’s only the third time since 2011 that the Blue Comets have started a season 3-0.

This will be the first all-time meeting between Nemaha Central and Chanute and it’s one of the marquee matchups in week four across all classifications.

Brandon’s Pick: Chanute
Justin’s Pick: Chanute
Kryndon’s Pick: Nemaha Central
