A senior and freshman have played well all season for the Valley Heights lady Mustangs contributing regularly in impressive fashion along with another teammate the Mustangs had one of the most potent scoring trios in the State.
A injury happened for the Mustangs, taking away one of the three go to scorers but the other two in senior, Sidney Blackburn and freshman, Kayla Smith are answering the call along with the rest of the team. Both Blackburn and Smith have stepped up their scoring since Brandi Jo Roepke went down with her injury and recently have the lady Mustangs riding a three-game winning streak and sitting at 12-3 on the season.
Last week both Sidney and Kayla posted strong games in a pair of wins for the lady Mustangs as they scored 24 and 22 points, respectively in a 62-28 rout of Blue Valley and followed that up with 17 and 18 points against Troy in a 53-39 win.
On the season both fill the stat sheet not only with points but in every other category as the senior, Blackburn averages 16.7 ppg, around five rebounds per game and over one assist, steal and block per contest. Smith just a freshman notches 15.5 ppg, along with over five rebounds per game and one assist and steal per contest.
Over the last seven contests since Roepke’s injury both have stepped up their game accounting for 71.7% of the teams points in those seven games and average Smith is averaging 20.4 ppg and while Blackburn is posting 19.7 ppg in the last seven games, up five and three points per game from their season averages.
After having to find themselves with the injury the lady Mustangs are riding a three-game winning streak and starting to put things together again as the duo of Blackburn and Smith are leading the charge for the team who has their sights set on another postseason run again like last year.
