The Hiawatha lady Red Hawks have been red hot on basketball court in the second half of the season as they are on a three-game winning streak and are 8-2 in their last 10 games, to sit at 11-7 on the year.
One key reason to the Red Hawks success has been the play of junior, Emily Gartner who has been a terror for other Big Seven League teams to stop this season. Gartner helped the Red Hawks to a 2-0 week last week topping Perry Lecompton at home 58-44, a game in which Emily posted a season high 32 points with 23 points coming in the second half. The junior and her teammates followed that up with a 44-32 win over ACCHS on the road, as Gartner led the charge with 26 points.
In the game that started this current three-game win streak for Hiawatha the Red Hawks avenged an earlier season 25 point loss to the Big Seven League’s top team, Sabetha, picking up the 47-45 win as Gartner dominated that contest with 25 points and 25 rebounds.
On the season Gartner has been a force posting 20.9 ppg, 13.5 rpg, 4.4 bpg all three of which lead the Big Seven League this season. On the year Emily has led the team in scoring in 17 of the 18 games, while registering 10 games with 20 or more points and three 30-plus point games.
The Red Hawks have found a stride under new head coach, Brady Jasper in the second half of the season and behind the play of Gartner along with her teammates are looking to close out the season with momentum to take into the postseason and make some noise.
