Atchison baseball team is off to a strong 4-0 start to the season; winning a pair of lopsided games and two tight contests.
The season started on the diamond for the Redmen with 15-0 and 16-0 routs of KC Wyandotte in the season opening double header and Atchison followed that up winning a pair of tight games against Oskaloosa 3-2 and 5-1.
A big part of the early season success for the Redmen has been the play of junior, Adam Smith who is off to a strong start this season at the plate and on the mound.
Smith started the season going 2-2 with two RBI’s, three runs scored, a walk and stolen base in the season opening 15-0 rout of KC Wyandotte. The junior followed that up in the 16-0 win with another 2-2 performance at the plate with three runs scored, an RBI, double, triple and two walks, while also pitching two innings for the win giving up just one hit and striking out five.
The next two games weren’t as easy to get wins as the first two for Atchison but the Redmen outdueled Oskaloosa for 3-2 and 5-1 wins. In the 3-2 win Smith was 3-3 with an RBI, run scored, walk and three stolen bases and while he struggled from the plate in game two he went seven innings giving up just one run and five walks, while striking out 11 to earn the win on the mound in the 5-1 win.
On the season Smith is hitting .700 with seven hits, eight runs scored, four RBI’s, five walks and five stolen bases, while going 2-0 on the mound with a 0.78 ERA in nine innings giving up just one-hit, five walks and striking out 16.
Smith and his teammates look to continue their early season momentum and put together a strong season on baseball field.
