For the first time since 1982 the Perry Lecompton Kaw boys basketball team are headed to the State tournament after claiming the Sub-State title at Silver Lake last week.
The Kaws got the postseason rolling with a 58-43 first round Sub-State win over Oskaloosa starting the game strong with an 18-6 first quarter using that to propel themselves to the win. Colton Mallonee led the Kaws with 21 points, while Canaan Daniels netted 11 points in the win.
In the Semifinals after a 18-11 first quarter the Kaws only led by four at the half over Mclouth but used a 26-16 second half to earn the 57-43 Sub-State Semifinal win.
The Sub-State Championship was a battle as well for Perry Lecompton facing off with St. Mary’s and the game was tied at 34-34 after three quarters but a 16-10 fourth quarter pushed the Kaws to the 50-44 victory. Daniels led the team in scoring with 22 points, while Mallonee netted 12 points.
Perry Lecompton sits at 20-3 on the season having won four in a row and 13 of the last 14 with their three losses coming by a combined 16 points all games decided by single digits.
The Kaws are headed to State for the eighth time in program history and first since 1982 and set to face Cheney in the opening round of the Class 3A State Tournament in Hutchinson.
