Doniphan West Girls Basketball Team

The Doniphan West girl’s basketball team just finished their best season in school history as they won the Class 1A-I State Championship on Saturday in Dodge City.

The Mustangs beat Quinter in the title game 55-49 to win their first State Title in school history.

Three seniors, Kyra Johnson alongside Claire Cole, and Avery Weathersbee willed their team to the win. Cole finished with eight points and three assists in the game. Weathersbee with 12 points and eight boards, while Johnson finished her career with a double-double of 22 points and 13 rebounds. Brennah Edie chipped in seven points and four boards and Katie Johnson finished with six points and six rebounds. Junior Malaina Whetstine was held scoreless, but had eight rebounds, four assists and one block.

Whetstine with phenomenal hustle throughout, breaking the press almost every time Quinter threw it at her. Junior Lena Leatherman saw her role increase as well and played huge minutes when fouls became an issue.

The road didn’t come easy for D-West as they had to beat 8-Time Champs in Central Plains in the first round and then top-seed Norwich in the Semi-Finals. They finished the epic season with a record of 21-5.
